There is no standardization amongst form factors for laptops, so the quick answer as to "build you own laptop?" is "can't be done"

    theres no real barebone laptops.

laptops are very narrowly limited when it comes to customization/upgrades by hand.

If your talking about Dell products.... (Highly customizable) than go ahead. However there is no such thing of self built laptop. If you want to game on the go Alienwares, Msi and Asus all produce gaming laptops at a premium. You should make a desktop that enables you to carry it. Lanboy air case.

You can't really build a laptop. You can upgrade an old one (such as putting in a bigger HDD and more RAM) but that is about it.

Also, don't get a "gaming" laptop. Because you can get a gaming desktop for a lot cheaper that is twice as good.

You can build a laptop. xD
Laptop parts come like this: Motherboard+CPU and possibly GPU, Case, GPU (If wanted), Power supply (Is a b****), then all the standard, ram, hdd......

It just takes a lot of skill, and a little time.

Have fun if you attempt it. (If it fails, make sure you can return the product)
Pm me for a sig or mix. :3Cheers

There's no such thing as a power supply for a laptop. Power is converted from AC to DC prior to entering the laptop in the "brick" charger that you plug into the wall. From there it enters the laptop through the DC jack and is up-converted or down-converted between 3V and 12V as needed by the components, but the actual AC-to-DC conversion occurs outside (the primary function of the PSU in a desktop PC). As I said before, there's no standardization to laptop form factors, therefore you can't just get a motherboard and a separate case; you have to get a case already containing the motherboard. However, as mentioned above by xxTidusxx, there's no barebone laptops (there ARE, but there's not a wide variety of them, maybe a dozen to pick from tops, and they're from a few years ago and extremely underpowered). The next form factor to enter the mix is going to be slimline PC's. Once that's standardized, laptops MAY be next.

Agreed! You can purchase barebone kits but they are usually distributed to computer stores to get built. I believe clevo send out parts like this.

    Building a laptop yourself? No

Go buy a laptop that suits you, or go build a PC.

    A laptop is a PC.

And he obviously want's a LAPTOP for reasons such as using on the go for gaming. So I say go buy an HP and don't waste your money on people that want to charge more for their brand; IE Alienware and Apple. And people that don't have a horrible return rate; IE Dell, Toshiba, Acer.

If you're going to buy a laptop, stay AWAY from HP (I would've been with you before about 3 years ago, TehDoctor). Want to know why I HATE HP laptops now? Google: "HP Class Action" (no quotes). Have fun reading. I'd recommend ASUS laptops at this current time. Best punch for the price, and they offer accidental damage warranty (cracked screen, liquid damage, etc)

HP handled the lawsuit well in the end. They even replaced all batteries for that generation of laptops (Including mine). I don't think they make the same mistake twice, they make some decent laptops. However, I agree that Asus make some great laptops. Check out the U36

There are a few barebone kits on the market however they are old and finding parts is hard and expensive. If you really need a specific laptop to fit your needs, do some searching as it might already be on the market.

It can, but not from scratch. You just need a quality barebones kit, which will run you $400 and up. In other words
<$1000 = No self-built laptop for you. But if you have the money, it's going to be a hell of a laptop. I built one about 6 months ago, and it still out does 99% of the store bought laptops (in it's price range of $800-$2000)
