This is a hard issue to discuss. I predict that most people will enter, post their thoughts, then never check the thread again; for some reason, like with religion, people are unable to question or look factually at their beliefs about drugs.
These are the facts. I make no claim other than that they are true. Draw your own conclusions.
Heroin is extremely difficult to overdose on by itself.
Heroin is harmless in terms of health effects if it is pure.
Heroin withdrawal cannot kill you.
Heroin only has debilitating health effects when it is illegal and cut.
There are more ER visits from Tylenol than heroin.
Legalization of drugs decreases their use.

I would not suggest anyone try heroin. Many lives have been ruined by heroin... but the reason they are ruined is because it is illegal. If heroin was pure and cheap, no one would have to inject it, and no one would die because it was cut with quinine or other harmful substances. People would feel free to seek treatment if they needed it. Users wouldn't risk jail time, or contact with criminals.
Amen. Its addictive but it wouldn't be a problem if people could get it legally, they would be able to get it from dispensaries and not have to worry about other drugs being mixed in or anything else. The entire system would change the way heroin is used.

In one of the links I posted, it references a study wherein heroin addicts were given heroin from a dispensary and studied for 3 years. None of them died during the study, nor were any hospitalized even once.
Crack is a stimulant, ultimately made from the coca plant. Heroin is a depressant, ultimately made from the poppy plant. Crack can be toxic to many systems in the body; heroin isn't toxic to any.
No heroin should stay completely illegal. I believe on a HARD drug such as this if you want to do it you have to take the risk. Because Heroin is what causes the slums of New York, Chicago, and Philly. This is one of the WORST drugs known to man because of the high addiction rate associated with it. To even THINK that legalizing it would be smart is sheer stupidity.
Exactly, they over dosed. If it were legal and prescribed, they would only get enough to not overdose.

After using heroin for a long time you begin to build tolerance; using more and more of the addictive substance.
Lets say our friend "Bob" shoots up a normal dosage of 10mg of heroin. After quite he begins to build tolerance and ups the dosage to 60mg. He quits doing junk for 3 months. After that 3 months he decides to start shooting up again and uses his now average dose of 60mg. Bob dies of heroin overdose.

No, this is just a bad idea all together. Why do you need to have such a substance in your life anyways? There are so many other ways to get pleasure without harming yourself.

Allright, but education services are hardly successful. Once again looking back at my first example of alcohol. In the US I have seen countless campaigns and educations against alcohol abuse, they go to schools, they have TV ads; and yet millions of users abuse alcohol daily. Not only, are these types of Anti-Drug campaigns unsuccessful, they are also quite expensive, considering the deficit that we Americans are already in.

How does heroin cause the slums of New York, Chicago, and Philly?
That's right - because it's illegal. If it were legal, you would have no heroin dealers and gangs and all the violence they entail. You'd never have to deal with criminals. It wouldn't be incredibly expensive, so users wouldn't have to live in a poor slum to support their habit.
It does have a high addiction rate, but withdrawal can't kill you, addiction can't kill you (by itself), and if it were legal it'd be much easier to open support centers for addicts if they decided they didn't want to be addicted any more.
Finally, legalization decreases drug use as I posted in the original post.

So why not get rid of them? It would be pretty easy to make a system where you can go and get prescribed heroin, but only after going through a quick review of safe heroin usage. After that, if you die, it's your own fault... but you probably won't.
