The British used the standing army to impose control over America even though they were 3000 miles away. As the relationship tensed after the War of 1812 and the British were essentially broke, the standing army was used to ensure that the Americans paid taxes and did not smuggle goods to avoid the tariffs. Later on, the British would cut costs by allowing the standing army to follow tax collectors and manually search people's homes suspected of smuggling goods under the Stamp Act. The Townshend Acts would legitimize search and seizure and would send Americans to British courts where they were mistreated and, almost always, guilty.

...Relationship tensed after the Seven Year's war, because of the lack of money they had. The war of 1812 was because of the fact that the British were still in America and they were destroying American merchant ships, because America didn't have the navy to back up the ships. The british were taking Americans and impressing them into the British Navy. America declared independence in 1776, we were definitely not paying taxes to the british in 1812.
